Broward Schools to reevaluate which schools will shut down under new criteria

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Several Broward public school campuses will not be closing due to under-enrollment after all, but changes are still coming.

Some schools across Broward County will be dramatically different under a new plan to reconfigure grade levels and redraw boundary lines in hopes of boosting enrollment.

The Broward School Board has its ideas on how to accomplish the delicate task, but it’s the new superintendent who is in charge.

Under-utilized district buildings could also be sold.

Initially, there was uproar and backlash among community members when the district outlined several school closures, but just days ago, that closure plan was off the table and people with ties to those facilities were ecstatic.

But as Tuesday night’s school board workshop ticked on, board members realized the necessity of closing facilities sooner than later.

The superintendent was directed to identify eight schools that would have to shut down under a tighter set of criteria, which means different names could end up on the list.

There will be another meeting next month to further discuss that list and those schools.
