Prosecutors will pursue death penalty for mother accused in murder of autistic son
MIAMI, Fla. – The mother accused of first-degree murder in the drowning death of her 9-year-old son will be facing the death penalty. A Miami-Dade grand jury indicted Patricia Ripley of West Kendall this week and prosecutors said the death penalty will be on the table. The 45-year old mother is accused of killing her autistic son, Alejandro, last May. Surveillance video captured Ripley pushing her son into a canal behind the Kendall Acres Condominiums at 103rd Avenue and Kendall Drive around 7:30 p.m. on May 21. Detectives said Ripley admitted to driving to the second location about 8:30 p.m. and pushing Alejandro into the pond-like canal where he drowned.
Miami-Dade mayor candidates try to reach new voters in crunch time for election
The two candidates for Miami-Dade County mayor have just six days left to whip every possible vote for the nonpartisan position. About 42% of the votes in already in Miami-Dade are from registered Democrats; 31% from Republicans. “At this point, half people have voted, so we are looking at people that don’t always vote,” Levine Cava said. I’m mostly here for the presidential race,” said one of those voters, Nick Lumaj. “Knowing that they are nonpartisan, I’m probably going to guess, honestly.”We suggested a few minutes of research before they went inside.
Lightning strike possibly sparks fire at West Kendall home
KENDALL, Fla. - A fire at a home in West Kendall was possibly started Thursday afternoon by a lightning strike, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue officials said. The fire was reported around 3:40 p.m. at the home in the 9800 block of Southwest 156th Court. Officials said at least one person was inside at the time. WATCH VIDEO: Funnel cloud spotted over West Kendall
SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. - A funnel cloud was spotted by a driver in West Kendall near Tamiami Airport on Monday. Manny Garcia was headed west when he saw the small funnel drop down from storm clouds in the area. The funnel cloud did not appear to touch land and become a tornado. The Local 10 Weather Authority radar showed a strong cell of storms moving into Kendall and then growing in strength. The storms are unrelated to the tropical disturbance that will likely bring heavy rain and gusty winds to South Florida beginning Monday evening.
